Infrared thermometer is the need of the hour with the pandemic spreading its wings all over. There are few misconceptions that need to be addressed in order to spread the correct information:

Myth 1

Infrared Thermometers are designed to measure the surface as well as internal temperature: This is a plain myth when it comes to such thermometers. While the fact that it measures the surface temperature is correct, it won’t be helpful in measuring the internal temperature at all. Ideally, they are used to temperature the surface however the forehead thermometers are successful in measuring the internal temperature from outside.

Myth 2

While measuring with this thermometer, all the surfaces should be considered equal: This is also one of the most common misconceptions. This device works by reflecting the energy from the surface. Thus, it matters what you are pointing your gun at. Different target areas will have different ability to transmit infrared energy. If the substance is highly polished, it wouldn’t be able to emit enough waves to measure.

Myth 3

The laser is the part that reads the temperature: The laser only helps in focusing on the aimed surface in order to measure accurately. In reality, the thermometer measures read the temperature above, below or anywhere around the laser pointer.
